WEBVTT

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.000
<v Speaker 0>Hello everyone, welcome to Lights On, Still Scared. My name is Graeme Milne.

00:00:04.000 --> 00:00:06.000
<v Speaker 1>My name's Karen Swanston.

00:00:06.000 --> 00:01:04.000
<v Speaker 0>And today, in part two, we will be talking about phantom pets and spooky animals. Hello. Oh, I know. Hello, Karen.

00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:07.000
<v Speaker 1>How are you? I'm very well. How are you?

00:01:07.000 --> 00:01:10.000
<v Speaker 0>I'm alright. I'm alright. Did you recover from the last episode?

00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:11.000
<v Speaker 1>Just about.

00:01:11.000 --> 00:01:13.000
<v Speaker 0>Those ghostly ghostly creatures.

00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:14.000
<v Speaker 1>Indeed.

00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:31.000
<v Speaker 0>Oh, I know. Today we have, I'd like to think, some rather splendid stories from all across all across the planet, Well certainly across Scotland for me because I'm gonna, you know, I'm very insular, like to keep it close.

00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:33.000
<v Speaker 1>Don't go too far away.

00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:41.000
<v Speaker 0>Yeah, don't want to too far away, you know, it's like me going on holiday, don't want go too far away. I like to know what I'm used to. What have you got today, Karen, for us?

00:01:41.000 --> 00:01:47.000
<v Speaker 1>Well, it's it's quite an old one. It's the chicken from Highgate. Phantom chicken from Highgate. So

00:01:47.000 --> 00:01:51.000
<v Speaker 0>Sorry. I'm just starting to laugh already. I have no idea why.

00:01:51.000 --> 00:02:00.000
<v Speaker 1>It's quite an old one, this one. So so according to John Aubrey's Brief Lives, which I assume is a book.

00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:04.000
<v Speaker 0>I think so. I don't I don't think I've ever had the pleasure of reading it.

00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:30.000
<v Speaker 1>Yes. Indeed. So sir Francis Bacon was traveling near Highgate with physician doctor Witherborn when snow was on the ground. And Bacon wondered whether snow might preserve meat in a similar way as salt. They reportedly obtained a hen and used it as an experiment in preservation, stuffing the prepared carcass with snow.

00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:31.000
<v Speaker 0>Crikey.

00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:33.000
<v Speaker 1>So it's already dead.

00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:40.000
<v Speaker 0>What? Did he kill it all for the... I'm sorry. I'm digress.

00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:41.000
<v Speaker 1>Well, it's already prepared.

00:02:41.000 --> 00:02:42.000
<v Speaker 0>Oh, yeah.

00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:43.000
<v Speaker 1>Think someone had already prepared

00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:47.000
<v Speaker 0>So... Okay. Sorry.

00:02:47.000 --> 00:03:29.000
<v Speaker 1>Bacon became seriously ill shortly afterwards and died at Highgate on 04/09/1626. The traditional account links him becoming chilled with his final illness. Later Highgate folklore attached a wonderful bizarre supernatural sequence to Bacon's story. A ghostly plucked and partially plucked chicken was said to appear around Pond Square. The descriptions include a pale or spectral bird with few or no feathers running or darting around, sometimes accompanied by squawking or screeching before suddenly disappearing when approached.

00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:45.000
<v Speaker 1>It's not just like back then. Apparently, in 1943 when a British airman reportedly encountered the strange half blood bird around Pond Square. Some retelling says unusual sounds precede the apparition. Yes.

00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:46.000
<v Speaker 0>Saying of high pitched quacking,

00:03:46.000 --> 00:04:10.000
<v Speaker 1>I would think. When the witness approached the bird, it reportedly vanishes. More elaborate versions claim somebody tried to catch it once only for it to disappear or pass through a wall. So there's also a later reporting of the story is placed late sixties, nineteen sixties. It tells a motorist whose car broke down near Pond Square.

00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:33.000
<v Speaker 1>The driver supposedly noticed the mysterious bird approached it, at which point it disappeared. Another often repeated account usually placed around nineteen seventies involved a courting couple whose romantic moment was allegedly interrupted by a plot squawking phantom chicken. I

00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:44.000
<v Speaker 0>wish I could see what I'm thinking on here. But there's an expression people deduced today in the second word's blocked. That's outrageous.

00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:45.000
<v Speaker 1>A poor thing.

00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:52.000
<v Speaker 0>I know. Why didn't the guy, you know, mister Bacon get preserved? Should preserve the bacon instead of

00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:54.000
<v Speaker 2>the chicken. When I read that story,

00:04:54.000 --> 00:05:01.000
<v Speaker 1>thought that reminds me of a story about my granddad. He apparently... They had chickens, obviously. It was the war. Yeah.

00:05:01.000 --> 00:05:15.000
<v Speaker 1>And he went to get the chicken prepared for lunch and obviously done the deed and plucked the thing. Yeah. And I think he was like three quarters away through plucking it suddenly sat up.

00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:19.000
<v Speaker 0>Oh, no. So...

00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:29.000
<v Speaker 1>Yes. So my grandmother then promptly knitted him a sweater, and he he got a reprieve, so he just ran around the the garden in a sweater.

00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:32.000
<v Speaker 0>Oh, that's nice. I'm glad you... Because I think that you deserved

00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:37.000
<v Speaker 1>to keep He did. Yes. Yeah. And after that, my granddad was a vegetarian. Sorry.

00:05:37.000 --> 00:05:39.000
<v Speaker 1>He never met me again.

00:05:39.000 --> 00:05:41.000
<v Speaker 0>Do you know what color of sweater it was?

00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:45.000
<v Speaker 1>I don't know. Probably a feral sweater, I suppose, multi coloured.

00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:56.000
<v Speaker 0>That's a wonderful story, I like that. I can't think that. Oh dear. So where do I go with this? It's a hard act to follow this one.

00:05:56.000 --> 00:06:09.000
<v Speaker 0>Cribbins, I'm gonna talk about the glass cube castle dog. Oh. I know. Oh, actually, I'm not gonna talk about that at all. I've mispronounced it.

00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:13.000
<v Speaker 0>I'm gonna call the glass cure Castle dog.

00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:15.000
<v Speaker 2>Okay. Duh.

00:06:15.000 --> 00:07:13.000
<v Speaker 0>That's what happens when you get old folks. Anyway, this is near Blair Gowrie and it was recounted by a witness called Betsy White in 1940 and it appeared in, I think it's Emory University archive, called Kist o Riches. Kist o Riches. A kist is a chest, a chest of riches and it was all tales gathered from various people involved in the travelling community and some really interesting stories, so it is kept in the university archives. So Betsy described that during the war, when the men were all the way fine, a lot of women would often go on the land and muck in and stay in big communities and so she along with several cousins, an uncle and aunt, mother and siblings were staying near Bloody Gowrie in a camp where they were harvesting turnips, so basically they went there and worked for the war effort and, you know, produced turnips.

00:07:13.000 --> 00:07:38.000
<v Speaker 0>It was arduous work and they were to stay there for some time. There's no, you know, it's gonna be for three months, whatever, it just was they were there and that was it. One night they were aroused by the sound of planes and in panic, assuming there were large white sheets which were covering the fields, be an easy target. The occupants scattered. Betsy and her sister and three cousins were on the grounds of a nearby castle.

00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:56.000
<v Speaker 0>It was creepy, they said. You know, it was a semi ruinous castle, I believe. Without warning, her sister then screamed and fainted dead away, collapsing in an apple patch. Not so good. The crowd around her, pulled her to her feet, and asked her what she had seen.

00:07:56.000 --> 00:08:14.000
<v Speaker 0>The frightened shell stated that she'd seen a huge thing the size of a calf with glowing red eyes. It was a dog. The others, to no doubt alarmed at her distress, remained incredulous and said, you know, are you sure? She said yes, there's been a huge dog with a chain round its neck. The group rejoined the rest of their campmates.

00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:46.000
<v Speaker 0>She never wavered from story and Betsy was saying that some years later she'd come across a book on ghost stories, which she was quite partial to I might add, and she did read it. It said, of course, that the nearby castle was meant to haunted by a phantom hound with glowing red eyes of enormous stature. Stature. And that's the only story that I have personally found, you know, that's somebody said they saw it rather and it's always been there, so that was a 1940 story. There may be others out there but I find that really fascinating.

00:08:46.000 --> 00:09:09.000
<v Speaker 0>Who or what the dog was. Again, there are theories that it's maybe, you know, a poor tent of death or a black shuck kind of dog or something, really don't know, but certainly that's what we've seen and she had no prior knowledge of either which makes a bit more interesting I think. Anyway, that was it. Glasgowar Castle, Blergowrie.

00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:16.000
<v Speaker 1>Yeah. So, next story I've got, would you be surprised if I say it's my cousin again?

00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:21.000
<v Speaker 2>No. Do you think we should do a whole episode just of a cousin?

00:09:21.000 --> 00:09:22.000
<v Speaker 0>Yeah. I think so.

00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:28.000
<v Speaker 1>Oh, dear. So... Yes. So my cousin has experienced several odd incidents involving cats. Oh.

00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:38.000
<v Speaker 1>So, yes, it's very weird. She had a cat called Teddy. He was a lovely cat. He's pure white, but unfortunately, Teddy had quite a bit things wrong with him.

00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:39.000
<v Speaker 0>Yeah.

00:09:39.000 --> 00:09:53.000
<v Speaker 1>And he passed away. Bless him. So about a year or so later, we were just talking and she said, oh, I really like ginger cats. And I go, never tell me that you you like pets because I will go find you your pet.

00:09:53.000 --> 00:09:54.000
<v Speaker 0>Mhmm.

00:09:54.000 --> 00:10:02.000
<v Speaker 1>So I found this this beautiful ginger cat. And I said to her, go, you know, perhaps now's the time to get one.

00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:02.000
<v Speaker 0>She was,

00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:22.000
<v Speaker 1>well, not sure. Anyway, she went and saw him. And unfortunately, it must have been like a Tinder photograph that they had of this cat because when she saw the cat, it looked nothing like the photograph of the cat. The cat looked lush and blu... And this poor Harry, the little ginger one, yeah.

00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:33.000
<v Speaker 1>He was a bit of a sorry stay, so she had to take him away and she brought him back to health. Anyway, so she gave Harry Teddy's litter box.

00:10:33.000 --> 00:10:34.000
<v Speaker 0>Right.

00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:36.000
<v Speaker 1>Oops. She cleaned it.

00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:38.000
<v Speaker 2>There it was at her.

00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:39.000
<v Speaker 0>I hope so.

00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:41.000
<v Speaker 2>So this

00:10:41.000 --> 00:10:44.000
<v Speaker 1>particular time, she was sitting with Harry on the sofa.

00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:45.000
<v Speaker 0>Right.

00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:57.000
<v Speaker 1>Haggen cleaned the litter box. She thought, oh, sit down, have a cup of tea. Harry was there having strokes and all that. And she sounds... Heard something that sounded like a cat scratching in the litter tray.

00:10:57.000 --> 00:10:58.000
<v Speaker 0>Mhmm.

00:10:58.000 --> 00:11:09.000
<v Speaker 1>And even Harry heard it. So he looked up at her. She looked down there and she thought, that's strange. Anyway, she went to investigate and it looked like a cat had been in the litter tray.

00:11:09.000 --> 00:11:11.000
<v Speaker 0>That's interesting. It's

00:11:11.000 --> 00:11:12.000
<v Speaker 2>like all moved.

00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:12.000
<v Speaker 0>It's all moved.

00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:21.000
<v Speaker 1>Yeah. It's all moved and, like, scratched, you know, like they scratched. And she thought, but Harry was sitting next to me, and he just cleaned it.

00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:22.000
<v Speaker 0>That's crazy. So...

00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:30.000
<v Speaker 1>Very, very strange. So even the husband said she said, well, he said, well, I thought you'd cleaned it. And she said, I had.

00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:30.000
<v Speaker 0>He said,

00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:37.000
<v Speaker 1>but someone's used it. Yeah. So weird. Which was nice that they actually cleaned the litter tray.

00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:37.000
<v Speaker 0>Well, did.

00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:42.000
<v Speaker 1>Ghostly wee wee's everywhere.

00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:46.000
<v Speaker 0>Yeah. I wonder if that would be invisible, we could still smell it.

00:11:46.000 --> 00:12:03.000
<v Speaker 1>So she... I suppose she thought that it was perhaps Teddy using his train. Yeah. But when Teddy was alive, another strange thing happened. As one particular time, Teddy was sitting on his, like, scratch post.

00:12:03.000 --> 00:12:17.000
<v Speaker 1>Mhmm. And she was the other side of the room, and she had those those interactive ball toys, you know, that's like a plastic round Mhmm. That's like a donut, and it's got a little ball in it, and and you have to physically knock it

00:12:17.000 --> 00:12:17.000
<v Speaker 0>for

00:12:17.000 --> 00:12:33.000
<v Speaker 1>So it to he was asleep, and then she... She's looking at this... Because she heard a noise, and she looked and she could see this ball Mhmm. In this interactive toy start moving around. Right.

00:12:33.000 --> 00:12:36.000
<v Speaker 1>And even the cat's woken up and looked...

00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:40.000
<v Speaker 2>Mickoller looked at her to say, what's moving my toy?

00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:41.000
<v Speaker 0>That's weird.

00:12:41.000 --> 00:13:03.000
<v Speaker 1>So she thought that's strange. Really strange. So... And then she actually said to me when I was speaking to her the other day, she said it was actually a couple of weeks ago, she was coming out of her bedroom Mhmm. And she looked out and she thought she saw a cat and she kinda like stumbled to...

00:13:03.000 --> 00:13:06.000
<v Speaker 1>Because she thought I'm gonna tread on it. So she like stumbled a little bit.

00:13:06.000 --> 00:13:07.000
<v Speaker 0>Right.

00:13:07.000 --> 00:13:18.000
<v Speaker 1>And then she realized that it wasn't quite a full cat. It was like she could see like tabby marks Mhmm. On it. Mhmm. And she thought that that's really weird.

00:13:18.000 --> 00:13:20.000
<v Speaker 1>And then it quite disappeared. Now as I said

00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:21.000
<v Speaker 0>Yeah.

00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:28.000
<v Speaker 1>Harry was white. Teddy was ginger. This wasn't tabby. So is it that she's got a tabby cat?

00:13:28.000 --> 00:13:30.000
<v Speaker 0>Yeah. That's

00:13:30.000 --> 00:13:31.000
<v Speaker 1>haunting using the litter

00:13:31.000 --> 00:13:32.000
<v Speaker 0>tray. The litter tray.

00:13:32.000 --> 00:13:33.000
<v Speaker 1>Yeah. Yeah. Toys.

00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:37.000
<v Speaker 0>That's... Well, do like to make themselves at home, do they?

00:13:37.000 --> 00:13:45.000
<v Speaker 1>Yeah. Certainly. I think, you know, using the litter tray is a little bit too much, but then as I said, it's better than doing it around the corner.

00:13:45.000 --> 00:14:16.000
<v Speaker 0>I had a mate whose cat passed away and he says he could still feel it rubbing against his leg in the kitchen. I know Carol had a weird experience once walking home and saw a cat run up a wall like a ghost cat, like it was a completely shadow, it was a shadow, like it was dark but it wasn't a black cat, was a shadow, translucent but fully formed, and it just ran across the road in front of her and up the wall and over, and she was with a friend at the time, so, you know, witnesses, and they both went like, did you just see that?

00:14:16.000 --> 00:14:31.000
<v Speaker 1>Yeah. Yeah. Same thing happened when my cat, one of my my cat Nefi passed, we were off... Or I would often see it because we had, a townhouse. And I would often see her walk along the landing, and again, was just like translucently, but you can make out Yeah.

00:14:31.000 --> 00:14:42.000
<v Speaker 1>The stroke because she was tabby and white. You can make out the strokes, but her legs were kinda like all wispy Yeah. Which was a bit strange. And Neil would see her in the dining room. He would see her as a shadow.

00:14:42.000 --> 00:14:42.000
<v Speaker 0>Right.

00:14:42.000 --> 00:14:50.000
<v Speaker 1>He would holler up saying, I've just seen the spooky cat. And I'll say, it's not spooky cat's nephew. Yeah. It's it's weird.

00:14:50.000 --> 00:15:15.000
<v Speaker 0>I saw something so one once a friend who saw their cat, they passed away but only half of it, like the back half, but it was... So it was like it was walking normally as we'd expect it to walk except obviously the... Like half the body in front was missing, but the bottom half was just doing like the normal movements a cat would make Mhmm. Which is kinda interesting and unnerving in his full measures.

00:15:15.000 --> 00:15:24.000
<v Speaker 1>We did have our pre... He was nephew's brother, Ramesses. He'd just passed a few days. We were, like, making lunch.

00:15:24.000 --> 00:15:24.000
<v Speaker 0>Yeah.

00:15:24.000 --> 00:15:30.000
<v Speaker 1>Ramesses loved butter. I know we shouldn't have loved butter. We we've given him butter, but he loved butter.

00:15:30.000 --> 00:15:30.000
<v Speaker 0>Yeah.

00:15:30.000 --> 00:15:39.000
<v Speaker 1>And Neil was making a sandwich and he was like... Had the butter and we heard... I mean, had quite a distinctive meow. Mhmm. We heard his meow.

00:15:39.000 --> 00:15:41.000
<v Speaker 1>We both heard it. It was right next to us.

00:15:41.000 --> 00:15:42.000
<v Speaker 0>That's wild.

00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:50.000
<v Speaker 1>And Neil went, that's a bit weird. We thought we thought coming for last bit of butter. Bless him.

00:15:50.000 --> 00:15:54.000
<v Speaker 0>There's a moral to the story here folks, if you're gonna get pet, get a stick insect.

00:15:54.000 --> 00:15:59.000
<v Speaker 1>Indeed. Mind you. Don't want that crawling over your face.

00:15:59.000 --> 00:16:00.000
<v Speaker 0>Well, that's true.

00:16:00.000 --> 00:16:01.000
<v Speaker 1>Middle of the night.

00:16:01.000 --> 00:16:14.000
<v Speaker 0>I could just be a twig. I don't know. It's strange, isn't it? I've got a story that's a dog story, and it... It's it's one of these when you say, it happened to me.

00:16:14.000 --> 00:17:35.000
<v Speaker 0>When I stayed at the witchery, actually the night after my wedding night, thirteen years ago, I had a very, very strange and profound experience and basically on the second night there, we were, this night we were given as a gift from friends, it was great. We had a really weird, well I had a weird experience because I saw a ghost dog and it wasn't like, you know, something, it was like, it looks a bit like a dog, it definitely was a dog and unfortunately Carol got on her bed so there's nobody corroborated the story, was just me seeing it, but I do remember in the witchery there's a suite called the Armory Suite and the dog was, I could hear it before I could see it because I could hear scraping on the floor and it was quite obviously something scratching and this dog came around the corner and just sort of moved towards me very, very quickly, I mean abnormally quick, know, literally I saw it around the corner then it was right at my feet and it was one of these massive Irish wolfhounds or it could have been a deerhound but big and grey and I like that kind of dogs but I must admit I did drop my tea, smashed the cups and got a bit of a flag as they say and ended up running into the bedroom and poked into the bed and thought I'd lay there.

00:17:35.000 --> 00:18:42.000
<v Speaker 0>You know when you've had a of weird experience, you've got a coat in the bed and hope that and eventually fell asleep because nothing else was happening but in the morning when I spoke to Carol she said, oh, she'd had a similar experience, not with the dog but with the man, it was a guy walking about at the foot of the bed. So we talked to the guy, the guy that signed us in the hotel and he was telling us all these stories which was very interesting but to cut back to the dog thing, years later I did a tour for an American psychic, it was a two hour tour and we're talking about ghosts and what have you and I explained obviously the story and she stood outside and, you know, sort of looked up at the window and said, oh, I'll tell you why the ghost dog is there, it's attracted to an object in the building and the object is a hat and there are three hats and they're sitting on a cabinet at the foot of the bed and that's absolutely a 100 true, there were three hats at the foot of the bed in a cabinet and allegedly the middle one belonged to the dog's owner and for some reason that's why the thing was hanging about there.

00:18:42.000 --> 00:19:08.000
<v Speaker 0>So that was a really odd story. Now this happened, this tour happened a few years after the fact and I was gobsmacked because she'd never been to Edinburgh in her life and somehow was able to pinpoint that, which is odd. But it was solid and that's, I think, I just thought, you know when your brain's clicking clicking in and you think, oh, why is there a big dog in my room? Because it's real. It wasn't.

00:19:08.000 --> 00:19:10.000
<v Speaker 0>Yes. And I smashed the cup.

00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:11.000
<v Speaker 1>Oh, no.

00:19:11.000 --> 00:19:15.000
<v Speaker 0>No. They forgave me.

00:19:15.000 --> 00:19:17.000
<v Speaker 1>So did anyone else seen the dog?

00:19:17.000 --> 00:19:52.000
<v Speaker 0>No, not that I'm aware of. What they'd seen, people had seen monks, obviously, as you do, people had seen or felt a presence. I believe beds were stripped and pulled back covers by something but not often seen, just physically stripped. Sometimes shapes would be seen in the bed where people had to lie down once they were made, potentially a woman in the restaurant but I've never had that 100% confirmed but dogs, no, I think I was the only one so far that I'm aware of.

00:19:52.000 --> 00:19:54.000
<v Speaker 1>That's a big dog to actually see as well.

00:19:54.000 --> 00:20:11.000
<v Speaker 0>It was very odd, I mean, was just like, it's like when you blink and it just moved that quick, it went from like that, so I don't know. I kinda liked it in retrospect, I mean, at the time it was like, oh, when I look back and think, well, that's pretty cool. It's a good story to tell, you know.

00:20:11.000 --> 00:20:14.000
<v Speaker 1>Well, I would have more than drop my tea.

00:20:14.000 --> 00:20:18.000
<v Speaker 0>Well, I did scream. Well, no, I know I didn't scream. Was, you know...

00:20:18.000 --> 00:20:19.000
<v Speaker 1>Was it a manly scream?

00:20:19.000 --> 00:20:29.000
<v Speaker 0>It was a very manly scream indeed. It was like, oh, I don't know, caveman grunting I suspect. Either or a boy soprano, one or the other, I'm not sure.

00:20:29.000 --> 00:20:37.000
<v Speaker 1>Yeah. Oh, well, I've got a a quick... Well, short... Quite short story here. Owl the Llama.

00:20:37.000 --> 00:20:37.000
<v Speaker 0>A

00:20:37.000 --> 00:20:43.000
<v Speaker 1>llama? A llama. Yes. A bit different. So it concerns two llamas.

00:20:43.000 --> 00:20:48.000
<v Speaker 1>One named grandpa and the other one called owl.

00:20:48.000 --> 00:20:52.000
<v Speaker 0>Alf. Owl. Owl. Owl. That's great.

00:20:52.000 --> 00:21:10.000
<v Speaker 1>So grandpa was the older of the pair. When he died of old age, seven year old Owl appeared to be devastated at the loss of his companion. And according to his owner, spent his days sitting beside grandpa's grave as though he was keeping watch over him.

00:21:10.000 --> 00:21:12.000
<v Speaker 0>Aw. That's a shame.

00:21:12.000 --> 00:21:36.000
<v Speaker 1>Sammy, only two weeks later, tragedy struck again. Owl ate bark from a cherry tree, which can be poisonous to animals, and he collapsed and died with his owner beside him. Oh, poor Owl. The owner had now lost both of her much beloved llamas within a matter of weeks. And despite her grief, she still had the remaining animals to care for.

00:21:36.000 --> 00:22:03.000
<v Speaker 1>So every morning, before dawn, she made herself go outside to feed them. It was during those early mornings something remarkable began to happen. The owner said that she would see Al sitting beneath the evergreen in his favorite place, quietly watching her as she worked. This was not described as a single feeding glimpse. She claimed that Owl appeared there every morning for almost two weeks.

00:22:03.000 --> 00:22:24.000
<v Speaker 1>And then suddenly, as his visits began, they stopped. Now the owner came to believe that Owl had remained close because he knew that she was devastated, and in her words, it seemed that he continued visiting until he was satisfied she was gonna be alright. Oh, that's a nice

00:22:24.000 --> 00:22:24.000
<v Speaker 2>little story.

00:22:24.000 --> 00:22:28.000
<v Speaker 0>That's a nice story. Sorry for her. Poor

00:22:28.000 --> 00:22:32.000
<v Speaker 1>little thing. Oh, I know. Mind you, a number of things that they eat usually.

00:22:32.000 --> 00:22:33.000
<v Speaker 0>They do eat terrible things.

00:22:33.000 --> 00:22:41.000
<v Speaker 1>I joke. A number of times I'm hollering at the dogs, like, don't eat that. You don't know what it is.

00:22:41.000 --> 00:22:43.000
<v Speaker 0>Oh, shit. I wonder if grandpa made an appearance.

00:22:43.000 --> 00:22:47.000
<v Speaker 1>Oh, that would be nice, wouldn't it? Mhmm. I

00:22:47.000 --> 00:22:49.000
<v Speaker 0>have a wee story for her for... It's about a monkey.

00:22:49.000 --> 00:22:50.000
<v Speaker 1>A monkey?

00:22:50.000 --> 00:22:52.000
<v Speaker 0>A monkey in Kuros Palace.

00:22:52.000 --> 00:22:53.000
<v Speaker 1>Oh.

00:22:53.000 --> 00:23:45.000
<v Speaker 0>So Kuros Palace is obviously in the village of Kuros, used as a film location for Outlander and is a really beautiful building built by or for George Martin, sir George Martin who was a very wealthy local there who made money from salt among other things and this pass was built in two two different occasions, think it was added to twice, but it's very very beautiful. Lots of different ghost stories from it, but in keeping with this theme, I wanted to talk a little bit about the phantom monkey. Mhmm. So there is a room there which they call the principal stranger's room and it was once used as a bedroom for visitors to the palace and in it sits a large four poster bed. Now it's a really cool room and the bed is there and I've been in it and it's all good.

00:23:45.000 --> 00:23:47.000
<v Speaker 1>Yeah. Think I've been in it. You've been in it?

00:23:47.000 --> 00:24:25.000
<v Speaker 0>It's a nice room. But there are activities in the room, like ghost activity, not not just by the monkey but just weird interesting activity, but the monkey has been seen described as gambling and clambering across the bed. Oh. So it was there that an investigation team claimed to have captured several images which shows a two foot high figure moving around the room with ease. Now there is a machine, if I can use that word today, which a lot of researchers use in which they're supposed to...

00:24:25.000 --> 00:24:30.000
<v Speaker 0>You can see a ghostly figure and it comes out looking like a stickman.

00:24:30.000 --> 00:24:35.000
<v Speaker 1>Oh, s l s thing? Yes. Yeah.

00:24:35.000 --> 00:24:37.000
<v Speaker 0>So I think we used that

00:24:37.000 --> 00:24:37.000
<v Speaker 2>Okay.

00:24:37.000 --> 00:24:48.000
<v Speaker 0>On this occasion and this small two foot stick like thing was swinging about on the the bed and, you know, bit very quickly and

00:24:48.000 --> 00:24:49.000
<v Speaker 1>Yeah.

00:24:49.000 --> 00:25:19.000
<v Speaker 0>Which suggests something a bit unusual. So Linda, we'll wait for two weeks after the building, you know, she took us round at that time and was suggested, so obviously they can't prove this, as very busy port it was not uncommon for sailors to take back exotic pets and other more commonly placed animals have also been seen there including the spirit of a medium sized dog, friendly of course as most dogs are, so they feel the canine in that room rubbing against their legs as well as the monkey.

00:25:19.000 --> 00:25:22.000
<v Speaker 1>Yeah. I won't want a monkey, Robert.

00:25:22.000 --> 00:25:23.000
<v Speaker 0>No, a monkey's a bit

00:25:23.000 --> 00:25:24.000
<v Speaker 1>That's a bit weird.

00:25:24.000 --> 00:25:39.000
<v Speaker 0>A bit too of a handful. Indeed. No, but they're kind of like, I don't know, kinda... I don't know if they're gonna... I don't know if I've never had a monkey as a pet, but I do know that...

00:25:39.000 --> 00:25:47.000
<v Speaker 0>Well, Carol's mom had a monkey as a pet. Do you believe it? Well, when they lived over in Singapore Yeah. And actually bit her in the neck. Oh.

00:25:47.000 --> 00:25:49.000
<v Speaker 0>So, you know, they're a bit volatile.

00:25:49.000 --> 00:25:51.000
<v Speaker 1>Yeah. It's not a nice monkey.

00:25:51.000 --> 00:25:52.000
<v Speaker 0>Well, they got rid of it.

00:25:52.000 --> 00:25:55.000
<v Speaker 1>Oh. It was a killer monkey. Monkey by the sounds

00:25:55.000 --> 00:25:57.000
<v Speaker 2>of it.

00:25:57.000 --> 00:26:00.000
<v Speaker 0>But there's another theme coming up.

00:26:00.000 --> 00:26:01.000
<v Speaker 2>Vampire monkeys.

00:26:01.000 --> 00:26:13.000
<v Speaker 0>Vampire monkey goes, we might be reduced to one story here for that one. We'll have to pad out a little bit. So have you got anything else in line?

00:26:13.000 --> 00:26:23.000
<v Speaker 1>Finally, my story. Now I must have... This is a good one. When I said... When we said about doing this episode

00:26:23.000 --> 00:26:23.000
<v Speaker 0>Yes.

00:26:23.000 --> 00:26:34.000
<v Speaker 1>I thought, I wonder if there's any, like, ghost goldfish. How how would you know there would be extra bubbles in the tank?

00:26:34.000 --> 00:26:35.000
<v Speaker 0>I

00:26:35.000 --> 00:26:39.000
<v Speaker 1>thought, well, but do you know what? I found a ghost cowfish.

00:26:39.000 --> 00:26:44.000
<v Speaker 2>Wild. I saw the happy dance. I could tell you that.

00:26:44.000 --> 00:27:00.000
<v Speaker 1>So, anyway, so this... The owner of this fish had three fish of the same type. Mhmm. One became eel. It was notably different from the other fish because it was smaller and more maroon in color.

00:27:00.000 --> 00:27:02.000
<v Speaker 1>So it wasn't a goldfish. It's a maroon

00:27:02.000 --> 00:27:03.000
<v Speaker 0>A maroon fish.

00:27:03.000 --> 00:27:15.000
<v Speaker 1>Maroon fish. And the other two were a brighter red. And because this fish was sick, the owner removed it from the main aquarium, placed it in a separate tank.

00:27:15.000 --> 00:27:16.000
<v Speaker 0>Right.

00:27:16.000 --> 00:27:20.000
<v Speaker 1>The idea was to prevent the other fish from eating it if it died.

00:27:20.000 --> 00:27:20.000
<v Speaker 0>Right.

00:27:20.000 --> 00:27:44.000
<v Speaker 1>And potentially them becoming sick as well, so that's why they've done that. But unfortunately, the fish died overnight. The following morning, the owner found the fish dead and they removed the body and they gave it a surprisingly elaborate send off. The fish was flushed down the toilet and apparently Amazing Grace was played.

00:27:44.000 --> 00:27:48.000
<v Speaker 0>You're joking. What they actually played? What record was it?

00:27:48.000 --> 00:27:59.000
<v Speaker 1>Yeah. In fact, the owner later explained that whenever one of their fish died, they played the loudest bagpipes version of Amazing Grace they could find.

00:27:59.000 --> 00:28:02.000
<v Speaker 0>I'm sure the fish appreciated the the

00:28:02.000 --> 00:28:07.000
<v Speaker 2>Which frankly means that fish got better send off than some humans, I think,

00:28:07.000 --> 00:28:10.000
<v Speaker 0>or of an amazing disgrace, but never mind.

00:28:10.000 --> 00:28:21.000
<v Speaker 1>Oh, dear. Now then the owner's sister was in the bathroom when the fish was being flushed, so she actually saw the fish go down.

00:28:21.000 --> 00:28:22.000
<v Speaker 0>Go down.

00:28:22.000 --> 00:28:39.000
<v Speaker 1>And according to the account, we had... So obviously, we have another account of the fish was dead. So Yeah. Have a witness there, and that the body had been disposed of. So the owner went to work, end of story, at least that it should have been.

00:28:39.000 --> 00:28:41.000
<v Speaker 0>Okay.

00:28:41.000 --> 00:29:05.000
<v Speaker 1>The owner returned home that evening and looked in the aquarium, and there were three fish in it, including the smaller darker maroon fish that had died that morning. Apparently, it wasn't floating or it wasn't lying at the bottom. It was having a bit of a swim. But I flushed you.

00:29:05.000 --> 00:29:12.000
<v Speaker 2>So, you know, they knew that the fish was gone. They'd seen... They flushed it. They gave him the send off.

00:29:12.000 --> 00:29:16.000
<v Speaker 1>So bizarre. Absolutely precise. So they knew that they'd done that.

00:29:16.000 --> 00:29:17.000
<v Speaker 0>That's strange.

00:29:17.000 --> 00:29:21.000
<v Speaker 2>The sister covered the room and said,

00:29:21.000 --> 00:29:29.000
<v Speaker 1>but we flushed the fish. Can it be in there? And they actually did take a photograph of Really? Fish as well,

00:29:29.000 --> 00:29:31.000
<v Speaker 2>the three fishes in the tank.

00:29:31.000 --> 00:29:40.000
<v Speaker 1>But obviously, then you couldn't say Yeah. Isn't that strange? That's really bizarre. Really bizarre.

00:29:40.000 --> 00:29:42.000
<v Speaker 0>Did it hang about much longer?

00:29:42.000 --> 00:29:50.000
<v Speaker 1>Well, no. Apparently, they went... They... At approximately 10PM that day, the fish was apparently still there. The owner went to bed.

00:29:50.000 --> 00:29:58.000
<v Speaker 1>Mhmm. And they woke up around 03:30AM and checked on the aquarium. And the fish had disappeared.

00:29:58.000 --> 00:30:04.000
<v Speaker 0>To be replaced by a monkey. That is wild.

00:30:04.000 --> 00:30:05.000
<v Speaker 1>That is bizarre.

00:30:05.000 --> 00:30:16.000
<v Speaker 0>It is. See, if that happened to me, I I mean, I know there probably wasn't a lot of cam, I'd be taking as much photographic evidence or or get as many people around to look at it. You know, he's got multiple, you.

00:30:16.000 --> 00:30:17.000
<v Speaker 1>You'd have to film the funeral

00:30:17.000 --> 00:30:27.000
<v Speaker 0>as Yeah. That's true because I think you'd be able to take your point and it's fishbone, it's dead. I swore blind. Was there two minutes ago. It'd probably get carted off somewhere and never be seen again.

00:30:27.000 --> 00:30:29.000
<v Speaker 1>That is bizarre. That's Really bizarre.

00:30:29.000 --> 00:30:30.000
<v Speaker 0>I know.

00:30:30.000 --> 00:30:31.000
<v Speaker 1>Strange one, that one.

00:30:31.000 --> 00:30:32.000
<v Speaker 0>I do like that.

00:30:32.000 --> 00:30:33.000
<v Speaker 1>I I didn't...

00:30:33.000 --> 00:30:37.000
<v Speaker 0>I like that. I've gotta say I like this. I like the chicken one as well.

00:30:37.000 --> 00:30:38.000
<v Speaker 1>Poor chicken.

00:30:38.000 --> 00:30:38.000
<v Speaker 2>Feel quite sorry

00:30:38.000 --> 00:30:44.000
<v Speaker 1>for the chicken though. They're in the afterlife, walking because they've got ice up its bottom.

00:30:44.000 --> 00:30:49.000
<v Speaker 0>No. No. It'll it'll be back to its usual side. I'm certain.

00:30:49.000 --> 00:30:51.000
<v Speaker 1>Wonder if they still see it.

00:30:51.000 --> 00:30:55.000
<v Speaker 0>For the chicken? Well, maybe.

00:30:55.000 --> 00:30:58.000
<v Speaker 1>Because they're saying the last time was nineteen seventies.

00:30:58.000 --> 00:31:00.000
<v Speaker 0>Oh, yes. It's not how long ago.

00:31:00.000 --> 00:31:03.000
<v Speaker 1>Yeah. Has he defrosted and flown away?

00:31:03.000 --> 00:31:06.000
<v Speaker 0>It's wild. The things they do these people. Indeed.

00:31:06.000 --> 00:31:08.000
<v Speaker 1>In the name of science.

00:31:08.000 --> 00:31:15.000
<v Speaker 0>Or something. Name of insanity perhaps. Have I got time for a story or are we finished?

00:31:15.000 --> 00:31:17.000
<v Speaker 1>We've got time for another story, if you want?

00:31:17.000 --> 00:31:18.000
<v Speaker 0>Can I sneak another story in

00:31:18.000 --> 00:31:20.000
<v Speaker 1>Let's sneak another story in group?

00:31:20.000 --> 00:31:24.000
<v Speaker 0>Check this out. This is this is an interesting one. The Tarvis Poltergeist.

00:31:24.000 --> 00:31:25.000
<v Speaker 1>Oh.

00:31:25.000 --> 00:31:54.000
<v Speaker 0>Yeah, an unusual story which made the headlines over a period of time in 1934 purporting to be the count of poltergeist activity. Oh. The village of Tarvis is in the North East, by the way, the location is a lonely farmhouse in Gateside where Mr and Mrs Wilkie and our granddaughter Bunty Bunty? Bunty resided. It was a lonely place, the kind of place where stories spread quickly among the community.

00:31:54.000 --> 00:32:19.000
<v Speaker 0>So the girl was lonely and friendless and claimed that a phantom voice could be heard in their abode and that the phantom tappings and other strange noises were caused by her friend, a little friend. No. People were saying, who's your friend? The grandpaits humble country folk quickly were brought into the tale and on being interviewed claimed that the phenomena was being caused by a beastie. A wee beastie.

00:32:19.000 --> 00:33:00.000
<v Speaker 0>A friend was a wee beastie. A wee beastie. A wee beastie. The reporter pressed on the matter and was surprised to hear that the beastie was in fact a jackdaw who, according to the story, was living quite happily behind the wall of their home. So this girl, let's put this in perspective folks, this girl is lonely and in the farmhouse, both her and her grandparents believe that her friend, if you like, is a jackdaw, a bird, you know, usually used to flying outside living in the cracks between the wall, tapping away day on day and so that was it.

00:33:00.000 --> 00:33:12.000
<v Speaker 0>So the story, as outlandish as it seems, was supported by their neighbors. Could it have been the girl? They asked mister Wilkie. He said no, Bunty had nothing to do with. Sorry, I'm breaking rhetoric here, this is a local dialect.

00:33:12.000 --> 00:33:27.000
<v Speaker 0>I will tell you it was a beastie that was a hint the wah, a beastie that was behind the wall. It was a jacktow, that's fit it wiz. He then claimed the beastie had a conversation with them while Bunty was at school so it couldn't have been her.

00:33:27.000 --> 00:33:30.000
<v Speaker 2>Sorry, what was the conversation going? Something

00:33:30.000 --> 00:33:52.000
<v Speaker 0>like that. The creature, they said, spoke in a high pitched voice. Oh, okay. So you were very close for the content of the conversation was not disclosed, it was in a private conversation. Under interview Bunty was, appeared, what do see, sly and a bit sort of like sleek looking and a bit kind of suspicious looking.

00:33:52.000 --> 00:34:38.000
<v Speaker 0>Others seems less impressed, they came visit us from near and far to hear the, you know, the discourse as it were, but it would only start speaking while Bunty was in bed in a separate room which made people think that perhaps the whole thing was made up. There was a cajoling, a sly look expression would creep over the child's face when Crick, you know, actually spoken to. It was then she admitted that she'd played the part of the ghost being an accomplished ventriloquist, so she basically made the whole thing up according to the story and was in the newspapers about four nights telling the story. So another ghost story soon fizzled out leaving the parties with very red faces. Dear.

00:34:38.000 --> 00:35:10.000
<v Speaker 0>It was very famous, was actually written about in a Poltergeist over Scotland book, there's a Poltergeist archive about it, it's been in the 14 times, I even saw a talk given on the whole thing at the 14 in Embra, know, with much more detail on the haunting, was hilarious. The banter between the main protagonist was hilarious, it was all done in Doric and they were all absolutely convinced that this Jackdaw, you know, was sitting there chatting away with them behind the wall and they were having a grand old time with it. But it was their granddaughter. Well... Allegedly.

00:35:10.000 --> 00:35:14.000
<v Speaker 0>Allegedly. Yeah. Yeah. You go, guys. What can you do?

00:35:14.000 --> 00:35:16.000
<v Speaker 1>What can you do indeed?

00:35:16.000 --> 00:35:28.000
<v Speaker 0>So, Karen, this is the end of our second episode on haunted animals, ghost pets and I'm sure next time we'll have something suitably interesting for you to hear.

00:35:28.000 --> 00:38:42.000
<v Speaker 1>Until next time. Keep the lights on. Still scared.

00:38:42.000 --> 00:39:12.000
<v Speaker 3>Fade. Maybe it's just trauma, maybe ghosts are made of fear. But every night, I swear I feel a presence drawing near. You can say there's nothing there, but tell me if that's true.
